Jim Gottstein, JD, retired attorney and non-profit CEO who recovered from bipolar and atypical psychosis.

Jim Gottstein, JD

Retired attorney, president and CEO of a non-profit

Was diagnosed with atypical psychosis and bipolar; recovered completely and has not taken antipsychotic medications since 1985. In his own words, “I have learned to recognize the warning signs and take action before anything serious happens.” He rejects his diagnosis and states that his psychotic symptoms were caused by a lack of sleep when he worked as a practicing attorney and was trying to do too much. In 1983, he was hospitalized and told that thinking about being an attorney was a “grandiose delusion” and that he “would never again lead a normal life.” His family found a psychiatrist who helped him recover, and he had his own legal practice for forty years until he retired (see his book The Zyprexa Papers). He is the president and CEO of the non-profit Law Project for Psychiatric Rights. He argues that the current mental health system is counterproductive because of its “overreliance on psychiatric drugs” and advocates for voluntary treatment models.
