Family Alliance for

Mental Health Recovery

The Family Alliance for Mental Health Recovery (Family Alliance) was founded by a group of parents whose children were diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) or with psychosis. It includes people who have been diagnosed with SMI or psychosis, their family members and friends, and allies.

A psychiatric diagnosis does NOT mean changing one’s life plans, abandoning one’s dreams, inability to have a family, and living as a chronically ill or disabled person. Recovery happens more often than most people realize. Family support plays a key role.

What we do

Provide mutual support

We help you connect with other families for mutual support and education. We share what worked and what did not for us and our loved ones, and give tips for choosing mental health providers and navigating the mental health system based on our personal experiences.

In some cases, we may be able to foster dialogue by promoting two-way conversations between family members and their loved ones diagnosed with mental illness.

Fight Stigma and Discrimination

We share evidence-based information on treatment methods, guidance on reading and understanding medical literature based on our experiences.

We are a diverse group that includes people of various races, ethnicities and backgrounds holding different political and religious views. We may disagree on political and religious matters, but we don’t bring these disagreements to our conversations about mental health.

Promote Recovery with Real Stories from Members and Others

We have real stories of versions of recovery and hope to share with you. We also have a list of resources to share where others have recovered and how you might consider beginning your journey. From various residential treatment centers to tapering from medication resources.

What we don’t do

  • Take industry money: we do not accept donations from pharmaceutical companies and producers of medical devices

  • Argue about words: we do not participate in terminological controversies (debates over the best words to use)

  • Give medical advice or “pill shame”

  • Promote unscientific treatments

  • Promote spiritual interpretations

  • Promote coercion

  • Have religious affiliation
